Current Research Interests

Prof Ma Jan's research interests currently focus on 3 main areas:

(1) Functional Materials

Inclusive of the synthesis, processing and characterization of smart functional materials for advanced applications such as biomedical devices.
Major projects under this programme include:

  • Piezo-electric heart pump (licensed technology to Orqis Medical, USA)
  • Frictionless micro-pump (collaboration with Caltech)
  • Minimally invasive surgical catheter (collaboration with Tan Tock Seng Hospital)

Biographical Information

Professor Ma has been a Faculty Member of the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) since 1997. Over the years, he has held various management positions in the school, such as the Division Head of Materials Technology, Vice Dean, Associate Chair and Professor of Materials Engineering in NTU.  He was seconded to become the Director of Temasek Laboratories (TL@NTU) in 2009, and currently is the Chair of the School of Materials Science & Engineering.  He is a Professional Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mines (MIMMM), and a registered Chartered Engineer of the Engineering Council in the UK. He is also the Fellow of the Academy of Engineers in Singapore.
 
His interest lies in the "Synthesis and Processing of Functional Materials" and has been instrumental in translating the developed technology, particularly in the biomedical and defence applications. Some projects that he has been highly acclaimed for include Functionally Graded Nano-Composites, Mesoporous Materials, Piezoelectric Micro-Actuators and Advanced Systems for Soldiers. He is also active in collaboration with both local and overseas universities and research institutes.

Working with the industry, he has also facilitated and spearheaded several programmes such as the synthesis of nano-boron carbide powders, world's smallest piezoelectric heart pump, micro-actuators for cataract removal, which shed light to the applications of nano-materials in future proceedings. He has obtained more than S$46 million from industry and government funding agencies, including DARPA USA. He is also an active consultant for both local and international companies such as Rolls Royce.

Professor Ma has received numerous prestigious awards including the National Day Public Administration Award (Bronze). He was the Helen Levitt Visiting Professor in Mayo Medical College, USA, in 2006 and was conferred the Guest Chair Professor at the East China University of Science and Technology, China, in 2003.

From 2004 to 2006, Professor Ma has also served as the editor of Science and Engineering B: Solid State Materials for Advanced Technology, an international journal by Elsevier. He has authored and co-authored more than 300 scientific publications, and currently holds 26 US & PCT patents, among which more than 10 have been licensed to the industry.

Current Research Interests
His group is interested in designing and modifying polymers for biomedical applications. In this work, they are closely associated with local hospitals and researchers, including the National Heart Centre, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Cancer Centre. Current interests include the following:

  1. Localized drug/gene delivery using stents
  2. Biodegradable polymers
  3. Injectable implants and nanoparticles
  4. Hemocompatibilization of polymers

Current Research Interests
Her main research interest is in the understanding of processing-microstructure-property relationships of nanomaterials. The research covers a wide range of experimental analytical techniques such as electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Such techniques enable the characterization of nanometre scale phases and provide an in-depth understanding of the materials' roperties. Her current research area is the synthesis of inorganic materials using chemical and mechanical processing techniques. The materials of interest are thermoelectric and energetic materials including metal alloys, intermetallics and functional ceramics.

Biographical Information
She received her B.Sc. degree with Honours and M.Sc. in Materials Science from National University of Singapore in 1994 and 1995 respectively. In 1996, she was awarded the NTU Overseas Scholarship to study her PhD in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge, UK. She joined NTU as Assistant Professor in September 1999, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2008. She was the Sub-Dean (Undergraduate), Assistant Chair (Undergraduates) and Head of Division (Materials Science) for the school from 2000-2004, 2008-2009 and 2009-2010, respectively.

Biographical Information
Chen Zhong obtained his BEng, MEng, and PhD degree in 1984, 1987 and 1997 respectively. He started his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in Hefei University of Technology, China in 1987. In 1992 he went to The University of Reading, UK as a visiting researcher. After completing the visit, he was further supported by an ORS award and a European Economic Community research grant to pursue his PhD degree.

In April 1997, he joined the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), a national research institute funded by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore. He has been with Nanyang Technological University since March 2000.

Ordered nanostructured thin films using colloidal self assembly and electrodeposition for the exploration of novel optical and electromagnetic properties; Ordering and self-assembly processes; Strain and relaxation phenomena in lattice-matched semiconductor thin film systems; Roughness evolution in planar and sidewall surfaces in reactive ion etching; Fundamentals of bonding in direct metal to metal contacts and contacts made via self-assembled monolayers.
