E-MRS 2007 Graduate Student Award

Our PhD student, Mr Yudi Setiawan has recently won the E-MRS 2007 Graduate Student Award at the EMRS Spring 2007 Symposium P Laser Synthesis and Processing of Advanced Materials, held in Strasbourg, France.

E-MRS Graduate Student Awards are intended to honor graduate students whose academic achievements and current materials research display a high level of excellence and distinction.


 

We are very pleased that our PhD student, Mr Ricky Chua recently represented Singapore to compete against contestants from Brunei, Hong Kong, Ireland, UK and USA at the 2007 Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition.

Ricky has done us proud once again by winning the 2nd prize at the competition organised by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), UK.

2nd TSMC Outstanding Student Research Award

We are very proud to announce that our PhD student, Ms Tan Tam Lyn is one of the finalists for the 2nd TSMC Outstanding Student Research Award based on her research project. She will be flying to Taiwan at the end of June to receive the award.

TSMC is the largest and most advanced foundry in the world. The competition for TSMC Outstanding Student Research Award is open to students doing research in microelectronics from all over the world.


9 June 2007: NanoFrontier signs multi-million dollar R&D agreements with UK companies

NTU spin-off NanoFrontier Pte Ltd has signed two R&D collaboration agreements with UK companies, Analytical NanoTechnologies plc and ROAR Particles Ltd. The agreements are worth S$4 million over a period of two years. The research collaborations will include using nanoparticles to mine information from trace materials left on fingerprints, and using nanoparticles to detect traces of toxins or other harmful substances in places such as chemical plants, or in the environment. NTU will provide facilities and manpower, and will share ownership of any new intellectual property developed as a result of this collaboration.

30 March 2007: Chemistry whizz laps it up at NTU lab

NTU's Professor Freddy Boey hosted seven-year-old whizz kid, Ainan Celeste Cawley, at the NTU laboratory. This was the first time Ainan had stepped into a real-life laboratory. The Primary 2 pupil made headlines recently when he scored a C grade for an O-level chemistry paper.

MSE Alumni Forum (27 Feb 2007, LT19A)


Five of our graduates were invited to share their working experiences from their respective fields, namely:


Mr Ting Chee Kheong (Banking & Finance, from Class 1995),
Ms Tan Sihui (Equipment Sales, from Class 2004),
Dr Jimmy Tang (Entrepreneur from Class 1995 & 2002 (PhD),
Mr Mook Chee Wing (Micro-E Manufacturing from Class 1996),
and Ms Joy Tan (Education from Class 1994).


They shared about their job scopes and prospects in their respective fields and the requirements to succeed. It was a candid session in which our students gained valuable insights into their working world and helping them to prepare for their career.

 


22 January 2007: NTU, US-based Insightra Medical to set up joint company

NTU's School of Materials Science and Engineering and a US-based medical device incubator, Insightra Medical, have teamed up to form a new start-up company called Ree-Trakt. The new company will develop disposable surgical retraction systems to help surgeons better visualise a wound, making access to surgery easier. Such devices will also be less bulky and lighter than conventional ones. Ree-Trakt plans to launch its first commercial product in the second quarter of 2007. Its market potential is estimated to exceed US$200m.

Miss Singapore University 2006.



Miss Annabelle Liang Xiangyi, 2nd year undergraduate in MSE, has been crowned as Miss Singapore University 2006.


She represented Singapore in the Miss World University 2006 pageant in October and won the title of ‘Miss Teddy Bear ’. Last year, Miss Liang was named the 2nd runner-up in the Miss Singapore World 2005 pageant.


Mister Singapore 2006.



Mr Dennis Lau, 3rd year undergraduate in MSE, is the proud winner of the Mister Singapore 2006 pageant. He represented Singapore at the Mister International 2006 pageant in early October and was voted as the most congenial, charismatic and inspirational contestant.


During his term as Mr Singapore 2006 and in support of the Children’s Cancer Foundation, Dennis will devote his time as an advocator and educator of childhood cancer awareness.



Biomedical start-up attracts US investors [28 September 2006]:


A Singapore biomedical company started by two NTU professors, Prof Freddy Boey and Assoc Prof Subbu Venkatraman, has attracted the attention of a Silicon Valley venture capitalist, who is co-investing US$7.5 million in the company. The other co-investor is EDB's Bio*One Capital. The start-up company, Amaranth Medical, develops biodegradable stents. The new funds will be used to advance the stents to human clinical trials.
