9th ME CHALLENGE 2005

Materials Engineering Challenge (ME Challenge) is an annual nation-wide event organized by Materials Engineering Club (ME Club). So far, ME Club has held 8 successful ME Quizzes. For this coming event, it has been renamed ME Challenge and a bigger scale is expected. Through this Challenge, we hope to create awareness as well as to promote Materials Science and Engineering. We also hope to equip participants with related knowledge and information regarding this field. During the Challenge, participants are given the opportunity to be exposed to MSE related knowledge and experience, both through the competition and the interactions with the MSE students and professors.

This year’s ME Challenge was held on the 24th and 25th of February at LT1A. 11 Junior Colleges (JCs) participated in this Challenge and they competed in this 2 day event to win attractive cash prizes. The Challenge had a few stages. It included the nerve-wrecking theory paper which tested the students’ knowledge, practical lab sessions which provided participants with stimulating hands-on experience and finally, the thrilling interactive quiz.

This event was graced by our Chair of MSE, Prof Freddy Boey, Assoc Prof. Tim White as the representative from the Materials Research Society, Singapore and other distinguished lecturers who acted as judges. This Challenge covered several areas of Materials Science and Engineering such as Polymers, Bio-materials, Metallurgy, Micro Electronics and Ceramics. After the qualifying round, 5 JCs made it to the semi-finals before the top 3 JCs were finally shortlisted for the finals. Emerging as the champion in this event was Raffles Junior College, the first runner-up was Victoria Junior College and the second runner-up was Anglo-Chinese Junior College. These winners won cash prizes, trophies, certificates, and textbooks related to MSE.

We are thankful for the two days during which the Challenge took place as they had been fruitful ones. We would like to extend our gratitude to all parties who have been very helpful and supportive in making this event a success. Hopefully as time passes, this event will be recognized as a prestigious regional-wide event that is open to many other countries besides Singapore.

More details can be reached at ME Club website.
