NTU's offshore hybrid microgrid powers Semakau Island

Published on: 16-May-2019

We are pleased to share that Professor Subodh Mhaisalkar has been interviewed on several media platforms for the Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator – Singapore (REIDS), which is a project undertaken by Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a host of international companies. Leveraging the largest system of interconnected microgrids in Southeast Asia, REIDS uses energy generated by various renewable sources, such as wind turbines and solar panels, to effectively power facilities on Semakau Island on a consistent basis. This platform and setting empower companies to test and incubate research projects on renewable energy. An added benefit is the real world conditions and tropical environment which can be mimicked via REIDS.

Another key feature of the endeavour is the speed at which the research projects can be executed through REIDS. This could be accomplished as REIDS does not need to be subjected to regulatory requirements which would incur time and money. After expeditious discussions with various regulatory bodies, waivers were obtained to catalyse and drive the entire platform.
