The MSE Programme


Industrial Attachment and Industrial Orientation

The objective of the Industrial Attachment (IA) and Industrial Orientation (IO) programmes is to help students acquire the attitudes, work habits and high levels of professionalism needed to function effectively and, indeed, excel in their chosen area of expertise.

Students can choose from a 20-weeks IA programme or 10-weeks IO programme either locally or overseas.  Current participating companies that  provide MSE students attachment opportunities include, 3M , A*STAR, Advanced Materials Technologies, DOW Chemical, ExxonMobil, Rolls-Royce, DSTA, DSO Laboratories, GE Aviation, Rohm & Haas and more.

The successful of these programmes has seen several of MSE graduates securing a full time job with their attachment companies even before graduation.

I did my Industrial Attachment (IA) in ExxonMobil for 6 months, in the department of Inspection. The department is responsible to maintain and improve the reliability of all the equipment and piping in this refinery by planning and executing inspection program.

I must say I have had a very enriching journey during my IA, as I met a lot of nice seniors and colleagues who were very willing to share their knowledge and experience with me. My greatest take away from IA would be it gave me a clearer overall picture about the industry and the job as an inspection engineer. I have also gain more technical knowledge through encountering real-life engineering problems and applications.

I was attached to the Material Support Lab as part of the Failure Investigation team in Rolls Royce during my Industrial Attachment (IA). As the name suggest, I was involved in assisting the engineers in conducting failure investigation on failed parts. The IA experience had been thoroughly enriching and it has taught me a lot in relation to what i have or going to study in MSE. The chance to execute task with all the related equipment had given me an invaluable experience that will come in handy in the future and for studies.
