Programme Requirements
MSE offers higher degree programmes by research, on a part-time and full-time basis. They are:
- Master of Engineering (M.Eng.):
Minimum period of candidature is 12 months, maximum is 36 months
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.):
Minimum period of candidature is 24 months, maximum is 60 months
Candidates may submit their applications anytime and those who are accepted may be admitted in either January or August, subject to the approval of the university.
Research:
The student will work under the supervision of an academic staff member whose research interests are in the area proposed by the student. MSE carries out research in a variety of materials-related fields. The major research areas are:
Inter-disciplinary research is emphasized, involving faculty from other schools within NTU, overseas research institutes and universities. Industry-sponsored research is active, with research grants being offered by a variety of local and overseas industrial companies. A more detailed list of research areas is given under the Research section.
Course Requirements:
In addition to pursuing independent research, the candidates are required to satisfy the following requirements:

Attend a minimum of 6 seminars conducted by the academic staff members. However, part-time candidates and all post-July 2005 entrants, are exempted from this requirement.
The coursework requirements for the two degrees are as follows:
- M.Eng. - 9 AU, with an average grade of B or cGPA of 3.0;
- Ph.D. - 18 AU, with an average grade of B or cGPA of 3.5
- In both degree programmes, no course grade can be below C+
Exemption from the coursework courses may be granted by the Chair of the School if the candidate is deemed to have already done sufficient coursework in the relevant area in a Master's degree program at a recognized university. Please click here for the exemption form.
A maximum of 3 course exemptions may be granted for PhD students, and 1 course for Master’s students.
At the end of the of the programs, the student is required to write and submit a thesis, which will be examined by internal and external examiners.
PhD confirmation exercise:
With effect from May 2009, in addition to satisfying the course requirements, students are also expected to submit a written proposal (20 pages) and orally defend the written proposal by the end of Year 2.
Scholarships:
All full-time PhD candidates, regardless of their country of origin, are awarded a scholarship (provided they meet the admission requirement). In addition, the A*Star scholarship is available for selected graduate students based on their undergraduate records. Certain industry-sponsored research projects allow additional monetary top-ups as well.
