The Division of Materials Engineering was first
established under the School of Applied Science,
offering a 3-year programme leading to the Bachelor
of Applied Science (Materials Engineering) degree.
An optional 4-year programme leading the Bachelor of
Applied Science with honours was also available.
1992
The 4-year direct honours programme leading to the
Bachelor of Engineering (Materials Engineering) was
introduced.
2000
The
Division of Materials Engineering was elevated into
a full-fletched engineering school - School of
Materials Engineering (SME).
2004
SME’s
invention of the world’s first completely-dissolving
heart stent created biomedical treatment
breakthrough.
2005
2006

MSE
signed MOU with renowned Mayo Clinic, USA to
conduct joint research in alternative cancer
therapy.

MSE
partnered the Eye Institute at Tan Tock Seng
Hospital to develop a revolutionary method of
cataract removal.
2007

biomedical start-up, Amaranth Medical Pte Ltd,
received US$7.5m in funding from Silicon Valley
venture capitalist, Charter Life Sciences and
EDB’s Bio*One Capital.
