Gold Awards for Nanyang Research Programme (NRP) 2011

The Nanyang Research Programme (NRP) is a programme which promotes collaboration with participating schools (from JCs to Integrated Programme (IP) Secondary Schools). Publication in Nature Chemistry - Asst/P Huo Fengwei

We are pleased to announce that the paper “Imparting functionality to a metal–organic framework material by controlled nanoparticle encapsulation” written by Dr Guang Lu, Dr Shaozhou Li, Dr Xiaoying Qi, A/P Hua Zhang, Asst/P Qichun Zhang, Asst/P Xiaodong Chen, Prof Jan Ma, Asst/P Say Chye Joachim Loo, and Asst/P Fengwei Huo* has been published in Nature Chemistry.

Nature Chemistry (Impact Factor: 17.9) is a monthly journal dedicated to publishing high-quality papers that describe the most significant and cutting-edge research in all areas of chemistry.

Winner of 2011 Nanyang Awards for Research Excellence - Associate Professor Zhang Hua

We are proud to announce that Associate Professor Zhang Hua has been awarded the 2011 Nanyang Award for Research Excellence for the exceptional quality and impact of his research work.

About the Winner
To date, A/P Zhang Hua has published about 155 papers. Some of his papers have been published in top journals such as Science, Nat. Commun., Chem. Soc. Rev., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nano Lett., Adv. Mater., ACS Nano, Adv. Funct. Mater. and Small. He has an impressive total citation count of about 3,000 and H-index of 30. Three of his papers have also been chosen as Front Covers in Chem. Soc. Rev., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. and Small.

A/P Zhang has been invited to give more than 80 Keynote Lectures or Invited Talks in many international conferences or universities, and served as the Session Chair. He has also organized several international conferences and served as the Symposium Chair. He is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Nanoscience since 2007 and the Journal of the Chinese Advanced Materials Society since Jan 2012. He has been on the Editorial Board of NANO since 2007 and is one of the members of the Advisory Committee of IOP Asia-Pacific since 2010. He is also on the International Advisory Board of ChemPlusChem since Jan 2012.

Since A/P Zhang joined in NTU in July 2006, he has guided more than 20 PhD students and postdocs, and more than 30 FYP students. Some of his PhD students received the Chinese Government Scholarship for “Outstanding Self-financed Students Studying Abroad”.

Promotion of Joachim Loo Say Chye

We are pleased to announce that with the conclusion of the recent Promotion and Tenure Exercise (PT7), Dr Joachim Loo Say Chye has been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.

The promotion will take effect from 1 March 2012.

Winner of 2011 Nanyang Awards for Innovation and Entrepreneurship - Professor Subbu Venkatraman

We are proud to announce that Professor Subbu Venkatraman has been awarded the 2011 Nanyang Awards for Innovation and Entrepreneurship for his work on biodegradable occluder devices.

In an attempt to address the drawbacks of current non-degradable devices to correct a congenital condition resulting in Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), or more commonly known to the public as “hole-in-the-heart”, Professor Venkatraman improved upon commercially-available “Double Umbrella” occluder devices by designing and making such devices biodegradable. Taking the success in developing biodegradable PFO devices one step further, Professor Venkatraman is currently in the process of using the same technology, with slight design variations, to address another condition known as Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA).

Launched in 2005, the Nanyang Awards are NTU’s most prestigious Awards granted to honour faculty, staff and students whose outstanding contributions and achievements have bought distinction and pride to the University. The Nanyang Award for Innovation & Entrepreneurship gives the highest recognition to individuals or teams who have made significant contributions to the creation of a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem at NTU, and contributed to Singapore’s economic and national development through the creation of entrepreneurial leaders and new business ventures.

MOE AcRF Tier 2 Grant Winners - Asst/P Huo Fengwei, Asst/P Ali Miserez and Asst/P Li Shuzhou

The MOE Academic Research Fund (AcRF) Tier 2 funds research projects on a competitive basis across Singapore-based universities. The research outcomes should also drive future research, potentially leading to innovations and discoveries.
