Current Research Interests
Over the past 20+ years, Chen Zhong has been interested in applying fundamental materials science principles to the understanding of material’s behavior and development of novel materials. To achieve this, experimental investigation has been assisted by computer simulation at different length scales. The main research focus is on the following areas:

Thin Films, Surface & Interface: Microelectronic thin films; Thin films for energy applications; Protective and functional surface coatings; Nano-structured thin films & surface engineering
Mechanical Behavior of Materials: Fracture, fatigue, creep, wear and scratch of materials; Mechanics of thin films and multi-layers, Materials joining; Structural & functional composites
More details on my research projects and publications are available in the personal web link shown above.

Biographical Information
Chen Zhong obtained his BEng, MEng, and PhD degree in 1984, 1987 and 1997 respectively. He started his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in Hefei University of Technology, China in 1987. In 1992 he went to The University of Reading, UK as a visiting researcher. After completing the visit, he was further supported by an ORS award and a European Economic Community research grant to pursue his PhD degree.

In April 1997, he joined the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), a national research institute funded by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore. He has been with Nanyang Technological University since March 2000.
