Current Research Interests
Dr. Yan has over 15 years of experiences in academic R&D in the field of energy and environment. Her area of expertise includes biofuel and biomass energy, greenhouse gas and climate change, combustion science and engineering, thermodynamics in thermal energy conversion and waste treatment processes, air toxics emission abatement, and advanced biotechnology for clean energy & clean air applications. She is author or co-author of 4 patents and more than 130 technical papers in peer-refereed journals and conference proceedings, of which 60 are SCI indexed and 52 are EI indexed. Her h-index is 15 by February 2009. Dr Yan has so far co-supervised 14 PhD and master students. She was also engaged in teaching to Phd/MSc students in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) during 2003-2006.
Dr. Yan has been invited as the Visiting Professor of HUST during 2006-2009. She is now sitting in the Working Group on “Standardization of Biodiesel Fuel for Vehicles in East Asia”, supported by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan. She has served as a reviewer for the journals of Environmental Science & Technology, Energy & Fuels, Combustion Science & Technology, Combustion and Flame, Water Science & Technology, Fuel, Energy, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Applied Microbial Biotechnology, and Journal of Air & Waste Management Association, etc.

Her on-going research projects include:

  •  Chemical looping combustion for CO2 capture
  • Advanced biomass gasification/pyrolysis/torrefaction for biofuel production
  • Algae processing technology for sustainable biofuel development
  • Bunker oil biocracking and biodesulfurization
  • Odor/VOCs capture through biofiltration
  • Abatement of various air toxics from energy conversion processes

Biographical Information

Dr. Yan Rong obtained her Ph.D. degree in Environmental (Chemical) Engineering from the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS-IMP), France, under an EU scholarship awarded from European Community of Steel and Coal (ECSC). She received both her MSc and BSc degrees in Applied Chemistry from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), China. From 1992 to 1996, she was a lecturer/researcher in the State Key Laboratory of Coal Combustion at HUST. Since February 2000, Dr Yan has been a Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist/Center Director at the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering (IESE), Singapore.
